A mote includes a CPU, memory, and peripherals. As a rule, peripherals possess three types of registers: data, control, and status. Data registers are employed as buffers between the CPU and peripherals, while control registers are used to adjust the I/O device functionality for a specific application. Status registers are read by the processor to check whether a specific operation is done. In spite of the huge variety of peripherals, the communication between the CPU and the I/O devices remains routine and easy to define.

There are two different timers present in the microcontroller, which are eight bit and sixteen bit timers. The two main registers in timer peripheral are timer/counter register (TCNT) and output compare register (OCR). The timer control registers are used to program the timer for providing the required waveform and interrupts for the application purposes. The duty ratio of the PWM signal extracted from the timer is dependent on the number stored in OCR register. Separate timers are dedicated to control the inverter PWM and the DC-DC converter PWM signals.
