Forthcoming years will witness a greater evolution of web-based applications, which are independent of mobile platforms, along with the evolution of faster wireless communication technologies, which will enable faster web operations. HTML 5 plays a major role in developing web-based cross-platform applications. HTML 5 has an advantage over Flash or Silverlight as it is widely accepted across all mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, and WP. Cross-platform solutions that offer application development and porting across multiple mobile platforms will be the preferred choice for enterprises and application developers.

The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a common and widely used standard for the representation of originally text content, structure, and layout, in recent years extended to the representation of multimedia content, including audio and video (HTML5), too. HTML is a domain-specific subset of the generalized Extensible Markup Language (XML) model, and XML is a subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). XML is a standard for creating languages that meet XML criteria like structural organizations and strict conformity to schemas (a language ontology). HTML is defined by its own schema.

As XML emerged as the leading markup language, and HTML has reached the end of its life, it was decided to evolve HTML to meet the XML standard. XHTML is the result. XHTML provides the feature set of HTML, but within an XML framework. It is backward compatible with HTML. It conforms to the XML standard, which means that the documents have to be well formed. To be valid, they must also comply with the XHTML DTD.

The platform tier is deployed in the cloud and communicates through the Http and TCP interfaces with the edge tier as well as the enterprise tier. A number of web applications have been developed to provide the user functionality and are accessed through HTML5 and JavaScript-enabled graphical user interfaces.
