Designing Resiliency: Interdisciplinary Geovisualization for Complex Coastal Environments

While geovisualizations are primarily constrained to the digital environment, designers and planners have been increasingly employing digital fabrication techniques to bring them into three dimensions. The 3-D map has a long history in cartography and design, with topographic relief and contour models being the most prevalent. Abstract data that is translated into physical models can be more understandable and engaging than two dimensional maps and plans. The 3-D map allows users to project their own spatial knowledge onto the physical model. In this way, the 3-D map can become a powerful research tool that provides users with a common platform to think creatively about the project at hand.

Topographic relief shows the amount of topographic variation within a particular terrain, and relief map show the elevation and depression by different shades. A ‘local relief’ shows variation in elevation between two adjacent points in the topographic elevation (hill) and depression (valley). The ‘total relief’ is the difference between the lowest and highest points in the terrain map.

As an indicator of the underlying surface conditions, the topographic features greatly affect the storage of water resources (Guo et al. 2017). The velocity of water flow increases with enlarging slope or topographic relief. In addition, the water holding capacity becomes smaller as the water gathering time becomes shorter due to quickly receding water, which leads to severe water and soil loss. Thus, slope has a negative relationship with water resource availability. This factor was calculated based on dataset of DEM with the slope tool of ArcGIS 10.2.
