Renewable & Alternative Power Technologies
Published in Neil Petchers, Combined Heating, Cooling & Power Handbook: Technologies & Applications, 2020
An ever-increasing number of structural applications are being installed, including many that are both aesthetically and functionally integrated into building structures. For example, a newly developed PV technology allows application of PV cells as roofing material. Roof tiles interconnect and can be installed over an existing roof or as a new roof. These may be designed as exchangeable PV shingles, which are flat panels that can be easily laid on and taken off a roof, or pre-fabricated roof panels that are roof-integrated modules composed of a panel that takes the place of roof sheathing and solar roof tiles. Thin-film technologies offer great application flexibility and can serve as windows, atriums, and awnings.
Exterior Enclosure Components

Concrete roof tiles originated in Bavaria in the nineteenth century. To this day, they still stand as a testament to their durability. They were introduced in the early 1900s. Recent estimates show that concrete tiles account for 90% of all roofs in Europe and the South Pacific (Boral 2002). Concrete roof tiles are about half the price of clay roof tiles; they have an average life span of 30–50 years; and the color does fade over time.
Modernity in Javanese tradition: adapting vernacular design and local culture to Indonesian urban living

Traditional Javanese people always try to maintain balance and harmony in their environment. The Javanese house geometric concept is influenced by nature. To illustrate, the pyramid-shaped roof of a Javanese house symbolizes the mountain because Javanese people believed the earth and sky are connected (Hermawan and Prihatmaji 2019). Additionally, Javanese houses do not have ceilings (Figure 2), and owners usually install glass tiles to allow light to enter the house. Air is circulated through small gaps to increase ventilation. A large overhang covers the entire roof. It uses clay roof tiles.
