Pulmonary reactions to chemotherapeutic agents: the ‘chemotherapy lung’

Procarbazine is an additional alkylating agent used in the treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and glioblastoma mutiforme. This agent has occasionally been associated with pulmonary toxicity.38 Although relatively rare, the most common manifestation is the development of an interstitial pneumonitis, sometimes associated with eosinophilia, suggesting a hyper-sensitivity mechanism. Progression of procarbazine lung toxicity to pulmonary fibrosis is uncommon, and reversibility after discontinuation of the drug is the rule. Pleural effusions have also been occasionally reported with this drug.

MOPP refers to a four-drug chemotherapeutic regimen composed of: mechlorethamine, oncovin, procarbazine, and prednisone. The individual agents were subjected to separate IARC reviews. MOPP was superseded by more recent therapeutic alternatives. MOPP initiates cancer of the lung and acute myeloid leukemia.
