Currently, the Port of Santos has a pier extension of 15,960 meters and a total useful area of 7.8 million square meters, divided into 65 berths (public and private) with terminals specialized in products such as vehicles, containers, fertilizers, chemicals, solids of vegetable origin, petroleum products, steel products and passengers (CODESP 2014). In Brazil, about 60% of transport is carried out by road, 20% by rail, 13% by waterway and 4% by pipeline, with the Santos pier having approximately 56 km of pipes.

It should be noted that some terminals analyzed in this paper are located at the same port. The Port of Santos has three terminals (BTP, Santos Brasil and DPW). The Port of Rio de Janeiro has two terminals (ICTSI and Multiterminais). Terminals in the same port may present different characteristics in terms of infrastructure (e.g., number of portainers, capacity) and frequency of ships and number of shipping lines.
