The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) decreased in the presence of coexisting ions (Wang, Liu, et al. 2013; Huang et al. 2013). The adsorption of chromium on amino-functionalized titanate nanotubes and protonated titanate nanotubes declined after the addition of chloride, nitrate, and phosphate (Wang, Liu, et al. 2013). The declination effect of anions was more for sulfate as compared to chloride, nitrate, and phosphate. The higher surface charge on sulfate was attributed to this. Phosphate exists as monohydrogen phosphate under experimental conditions, i.e., at pH 5.4. Hence, sulfate has a higher negative effect. The cations (Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+) did not show any significant effect on the adsorption of chromium(VI) with titanium-cross-linked carbon nanocomposites (Zhang, Xia, et al. 2015), and among anions, sulfate had a more pronounced effect than monovalent ions.

Silver nitrate 99%, hydrochloric acid, MO, glacial acetic acid, monosodium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium monohydrogen phosphate, crystal violet, sodium borohydride, sodium hydroxide and nitric acid were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (India) and used without any further purification. Whatman filter paper No 1 was purchased from Fisher Scientific, India. Dialysis tubes with a 29.3 mm diameter and 3.5 kDa molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) were purchased from Fisher Scientific, India. Phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was prepared by using monosodium dihydrogen phosphate and disodium monohydrogen phosphate. pH value of PBS was adjusted by sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. Ultra-pure water was used in all experiments. All glassware were thoroughly washed with aqua regia (3:1 ratio of HCl/HNO3) and then rinsed with ultra-pure water prior to use.

Peels of S. mombin were collected from Shahbagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Copper sulfate (CuSO4.5H2O), di-Sodium monohydrogen phosphate dihydrate (Na2HPO4.2H2O), H2O2 were purchased from Scharlau, Spain. Mono-sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate (NaH2PO4.2H2O), Sodium Hydroxide pellet were purchased from Duksan. TMB was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich, USA. The filter paper (double rings) was purchased from Hangzhou Xinhua Paper Industry, China. Distilled water was used throughout the entire process of study.

Resorcinol (99%), formaldehyde (37 wt.% in water, stabilized by 10–15 wt.% methanol), hydrochloric acid (>37%), sodium hydroxide (97%), potassium dibasic monohydrogen phosphate and potassium monobasic dihydrogen phosphate were purchased from Fisher (New Jersey, U.S.A.). Heptanoic acid (HPA) was obtained from TCI Chemicals (Oregon, U.S.A.). 5-cyclohexanepentanoic acid (CHPA), and 5-phenylvaleric acid (PVA) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Germany). The main physico-chemical properties of these model NA compounds are presented in Table 1.
