Radiographic examination of the pitted samples was carried out with gamma rays from Iridium 192. A direct digital detector array was used for radiographic image capturing. Detailed testing parameters are shown in Table 4. Due to the external nature of the pitting attack, the traditional tangential techniques are limited to high latitude, high effective energy radiographic sources (Gamma) rather than the high contrast X-ray sources. This leads to a loss of sensitivity, resulting in limited detection of the pits within the side wall and restricting the depth measurement in the tangential direction. For the detected pits, greyscale software algorithms were used to estimate the depths.
