Plasticizers
Published in Kathleen Hess-Kosa, Building Materials, 2017
Sebacates are esters of sebacic acid (C10H18O4). They are semivolatiles, requiring elevated temperatures to vaporize. The mostly commonly used sebacate plasticizer is dibutyl sebacate. Dibutyl sebacate (Figure 8.5) is used as a cold and UV resistant plasticizer used in PVC, polyethylene resins, rubber, and adhesives. Due to their semivolatility, sebacates emissions are unlikely in indoor environments unless the product is exposed to high temperatures.
Industrial Polymers
Published in Manas Chanda, Plastics Technology Handbook, 2017
For applications where it is important to have a compound with good low-temperature resistance, aliphatic ester plasticizers are of great value. Dibutyl sebacate, dioctyl sebacate, and, more commonly, cheaper esters of similar effect derived from mixed acids produced by the petrochemical industry are used. These plasticizers give PVC products with a cold flex temperature of −42°C.

Potentiometric systems are more reliable and cost-effective for a variety of biomedical applications [32–36]. These methods are also fast in terms of analysis time [37]. To increase sensitivity and detection limits, some biosensor electrodes have been functionalized with metal oxides [38,39]. Potentiometric sensors usually consist of membranes made of high molecular weight polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plasticizers such as dioctyl sebacate (DOS), dibutyl sebacate (DBS), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and o-nitrophenyloctyl ether (o-NPOE) as solvent mediators. These membranes can also be composed of lipophilic ions or molecules that act as active materials to promote specific interactions between analytes in the membrane regions, allowing selective pre-detection of the sensor [40].
