Atrial fibrillation can be reversed and the ECG returned to normal by proper application of a pulse of electrical current, that is, defibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation results in an almost complete cessation of blood flow from the heart, which means certain death if not immediately corrected, either by the administration of certain drugs or by the use of a defibrillator. A sharp blow to the sternum (precordial thump) can sometimes produce defibrillation as well. This technique is used to great dramatic effect on TV and in the movies.

The goal of this manuscript is to analyze the effect of MEF by different SACs models and the different material properties on the cardiac function during normal cycles and to investigate the role of MEF on the ventricular arrhythmia induced by mechanical disturbance, such as commotio cordis and PVC. For this purpose, the following examples are presented:In the first example, we study and compare the influence of the different SACs on the ECG and volume-time (v-t) relations recorded during regular beats of a healthy biventricular model. This study reveals that the morphology of ECG, which is an important tool for interpretation of the cardiac rhythm, is closely dependent on the amount of maximum conductance of SACs, the type of SACs and whether the myocardium is considered as viscoelastic or elastic material. In the second example, we present the simulation of mechanically induced fibrillation and defibrillation, referred to as commotio cordis and precordial thump, respectively. We show that a moderate blunt applied to the precordial region of the biventricle model generates electricity via SACs that can trigger and terminate ventricular fibrillation. In the third example, we study how MEF can cause a PVC when a disturbance in the ventricular blood pressure occurs. We present its effects on ECG, v-t relation and pressure-volume (PV) loops.
