Annotine has been shown to increase differentiation of allogeneic CD4+ T cells towards a Th2/Treg phenotype, which is noteworthy in the development of new treatments for Th1- and /or Th17-mediated inflammatory diseases (Hardardottir et al. 2015). Oxymatrine, isolated from Sophora flavescens, possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic properties. It has been used for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis and many other diseases. The effect of oxymatrine on inflammation is mediated by toll-like receptor4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) oxidative injury. Lycorine inhibites LPS-induced production of pro-inflammatory mediators. Acetylcorynoline, a major alkaloid component derived from Corydalis bungeana, has the ability to regulate lipopolysaccharide-stimulated activation of mouse bone marrow, a major modulator in the immune system (Qiu et al. 2014). Norbelladine a precursor for Amaryllidaceae alkaloids (e.g., belladine, crinamine, lycorine and galanthamine) reduced DPPH-radical by 31 per cent and superoxide radicals from xanthine oxidase by 33 per cent at a concentration of 10 μM. At a concentration of 0.25 μM, it also inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes by 51 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. Norbelladine may be a compound with the ability to quench radicals, inhibit COX enzymes as well as to suppress NF-κB activation at relatively low concentrations (Park 2014).

Phytosomes are molecular complexes of lipids mostly phosphatidylcholine and phytoconstituents (Gupta et al., 2007). Conjugation/chemical linkage in complexes offers the stability to colloidal system due to which drug loading is quite high compared to other carriers. Quercetin phytosomes were investigated by Maiti et al. (2005) for its hepatoprotective effects and bioavailability enhancement. Same group also reported use phytosomes for naringenin and curcumin to exert antioxidant effects (Maiti et al., 2007). Cao et al., investigated various ways of topical delivery of Oxymatrine, a quinolizidine alkaloid compounds (Sophora flavescens). Oxymatrine-phospholipid complex and microemulsion were chosen to improve skin permeation and occlusion (Fa-Hao et al., 2010).

Reportedly, traditional Chinese medicine is effective in controlling tumor growth, improving tumor environment, increasing the effect of chemotherapy and reducing drug toxicity [5–7]. The anti-tumor mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine are mainly as follows, regulating tumor immune microenvironment [8], promoting tumor cell apoptosis [9], inhibiting tumor cell proliferation [10], and inhibiting tumor angiogenesis [11]. Oxymatrine (OMT) is an alkaloid compound isolated from Sophora flavescens, which has extensive pharmacological effects [12]. At present, studies have confirmed that OMT can be used as a broad-spectrum antitumor drug [13–16]. However, OMT has some disadvantages such as short half-life and low bioavailability [17]. Therefore, it is valuable to study on the new drug delivery system of OMT to solve these shortcomings. Studies have shown that the preparation of OMT nanoparticles can effectively improve the bioavailability of OMT [18]
