GLP-1 and GIP are released from the small intestine in response to food ingestion and among other functions limit postprandial hyperglycemia through potentiation of glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells (Holst, 2019). GLP-1 also affects postprandial glucose concentrations through inhibitory effects on gastric emptying rate and glucagon secretion from pancreatic α-cells, whereas GIP under certain circumstances stimulates glucagon secretion (Holst, 2019).
