Chronic pulmonary beryllium disease, or berylliosis, is quite different from that of the acute form, with severe shortness of breath being the leading symptom. Pulmonary X-rays show miliary mottling, a haziness to “snow-flurry” effect. Histopathological examination of lung tissue shows interstitial granulomatosis. A dose-response relationship between extent of exposure and severity of disease is distinctly absent. As the fibrosis increases, bleb formation is common and pneumothorax occurs. This progressive form of berylliosis is accompanied by a decreased life expectancy.

The observed needling rates may be due to the fact that conjunctiva was opened for applying MMC. In the Preferred Practice Patterns for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has listed bleb needling as a recommended procedure to be used when necessary in the perioperative care to improve long-term outcomes of glaucoma surgery [58].
