Role of Artificial Intelligence-Based Technologies in Healthcare to Combat Critical Diseases
Published in Chinmay Chakraborty, Digital Health Transformation with Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence, 2022
Instances of significant organizations which has made a significant contribution to AI for healthcare applications include:IBM’s Watson Oncology has been developed with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Cleveland Clinic. To discover potential drug development pathways, IBM is collaborating with CVS Health and Johnson & Johnson on scientific document analytics on AI in chronic illness care. IBM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute cooperated on a project called Health Empowerment by Learning, Analytics, and Semantics in May 2017 to examine how AI can help with healthcare.Microsoft’s Hanover initiative, in collaboration with the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, analyses patient records to forecast the safest and potentially successful cancer medication therapy therapeutic possibilities. Two other approaches are medical image processing of cancer and the development of programmable cells.Deep learning software was developed by Kheiron Medical to identify breast cancer in mammography.

AI can make healthcare cost-effective, affordable, and streamlined; it can help provide controlled quality and cost-effective healthcare in several ways (choice of treatment, diagnosis, drug development and clinical trials, and patient empowerment). In healthcare, standardized formats are getting introduced to get patient data, then it is utilized and analyzed for disease patterns that will help in decision making and treatment. Moreover, post and pre-follow-ups can be defined according to the patients. The treatments are customized, creating the right intervention for individual patients. The effective and accurate treatment will save costs related to complications post-treatment. Diagnosis can be made more efficiently with the use of technology. Complicated CT scans for diseases like bleeding in the brain, mammography for malignancy, fractures due to osteoporosis, and many more remain unidentified, which lead to delay in treatment. With the introduction of artificial intelligence applications, doctors can analyze and review reports much faster, timelier, and more accurately. It will enable early detection, efficient diagnosis, and timely treatment of the patients. The development of life-saving drugs is faster with the help of AI applications; physical tests of excessive costs can be avoided by analyzing the effectiveness of medicines through simulators and algorithms. Clinical trials can be performed using biomarker platforms that monitor gene-level identification of various diseases. AI is empowering patients to make better decisions for their health. There are several mobile apps that provide basic information to users to help them understand, manage, and take better treatment of their diseases. It will lead to reduced cost, healthier manpower, and a more developed nation who live better lives. AI can bring significant transformation; India, along with other developing countries, may soon understand the benefits of this technology in healthcare. Development means bridging resources with innovative technology in the health sector; AI applications in India are starting to be deployed in different fields of healthcare, and will soon scale the challenges and bring digital transformation in the medical sector.
Enablers of artificial intelligence adoption and implementation in production systems
