Dementia-friendly ward environments should mirror the guidance for homes where possible. Ward equipment, mandated for infection control purposes, such as soap dispensers, elbow-operated mixer taps and enclosed toilet roll holders, can be difficult for people with dementia to use. A major focus of life story work is its use to promote person-centred care for people with dementia (Stenhouse, Tait, Hardy, & Sumner, 2013). The final product has the potential to promote respect towards and personhood for the person with dementia by providing a means of sharing – either verbally or non-verbally – life events. As with storytelling, this sharing of life stories is critical to forming and strengthening interpersonal relationships. Life story work also supports self-expression – a critical element given the loss of identity that occurs as cognitive decline progresses. A life story production provides a way for a person with dementia to connect to his/her past and, simultaneously, build and fortify new relationships with current peers and caregivers.

Life Story Work, or narrative biography, has been a therapeutic method focused on finding the meaning of life. It can also be used to collect data to understand processes of health/illness/care. A life story approach brings many different but interconnected rewards for research on aging. The story of an individual life yields information about a generation related to gender, cultural and historical aspects. Life story work can illuminate forgotten or hidden aspects of past experience, bringing lives that have been marginalized, neglected and degraded to the fore (Victor, 2005). As a process, it has the capacity to make links between past lives and present experience.
