Quality of Life and Survivorship in Head and Neck Cancer
Published in John C Watkinson, Raymond W Clarke, Terry M Jones, Vinidh Paleri, Nicholas White, Tim Woolford, Head & Neck Surgery Plastic Surgery, 2018
Disfigurement embraces concepts such as appearance, body image and intimacy. It can be associated with shame and stigma141 and social and emotional distress.142, 143 The issue of body image disturbance has been addressed in a review by Rhoten et al.144 There is a need to screen for appearance problems so that suitable advice and interventions can be offered.145
Body image

The assessment of body image is often essential to the diagnosis and selection of treatment for eating disorders because a disturbance in body image is a required criterion for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) and BN. Cash et al. (2004c) developed the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire, a measure which goes beyond the typical measure of ‘dissatisfaction’ by providing information on the degree to which unhappiness with appearance has an impact upon psychological and social functioning. The measure converges well with measures of eating disturbance, self-esteem, and depression. It also predicts variance associated with psychosocial functioning beyond that accounted for by BD. Cash et al. (2004a) also developed an extension of the Appearance Schemas Inventory, which is now a 20-item scale with two subscales (self-evaluative salience and motivational salience) and excellent psychometric characteristics for both males and females. Thompson et al. (2003) developed the Body Image Guilt and Shame Scale. Both indices of body image were associated with physique anxiety, body image concern, and body image importance. Shafran et al. (2004) developed the Body Checking and Avoidance Questionnaire, which provides an index of two of the key behavioral indicators of body image disturbance. They found that eating-disordered patients scored higher on the scale than controls, and concluded that body checking and avoidance were direct expressions of the Over-evaluation of shape and weight’ (p. 93).
Yoga and Healing
Published in Aruna Bakhru, Nutrition and Integrative Medicine, 2018
In participants who completed the study, a statistically significant decrease in anxiety, depression, and body image disturbance was seen. Spielberger State anxiety mean scores decreased after the completion of 7–12 yoga classes as did the anorexia nervosa scale scores, Beck depression scale scores, and weight and shape concern scores. No substantial differences in body mass index were seen throughout the trial. Yoga therapy along with outpatient eating disorder treatment demonstrated a decline in anxiety, depression, and body image disturbance without negatively impacting weight. The results from this pilot study recommend yoga to be a promising adjunct treatment tactic, alongside standard multidisciplinary care (Hall et al., 2016).

Factors associated with sexual dysfunction are shown in Table 5. The included clinical variables, treatment intensity and cancer type, both showed to be associated with rating low interest in sexual activity, and reporting dysfunction ≥2 domains. Additionally, when lymphoma was used as reference group, women with cervical and ovarian cancer were three and almost five times, respectively, more likely to report low satisfaction with their sex life. Furthermore, those diagnosed with breast and gynecological cancers were more likely than those with lymphoma to report sexual dysfunction in ≥2 domains. Regarding psychological factors, ratings of emotional distress and body image disturbance were related to dysfunction in most of the investigated domains. Finally, higher age among women with cancer was related to dysfunction in the domains Satisfaction with Sex Life and Vaginal Lubrication, as well as rating dysfunction in ≥2 domains.
“Have We Done Enough?” A Cross-condition Exploration of the Experiences of Parents Caring for A Child with an Appearance-affecting Condition or Injury

Parents’ beliefs about the importance of appearance seemed to influence their perceptions of their child’s visible difference. Appearance investment is the importance, meaning and influence of physical appearance in one’s life.40 Existing theory and literature around body image disturbance suggests that parental attitudes about appearance may also impact their child’s body image. The Tripartite model of body image disturbance41,42 suggests that parents influence the way their children think and feel about their bodies and appearance. Existing research has demonstrated that direct parental influence (e.g. appearance-related comments) and modeling of dieting and other related behaviors were significantly related to body image and eating disturbance in both male and female adolescents,43–46 showing that parental attitudes can influence child appearance satisfaction. Investigating parental attitudes toward appearance in a visible difference population is important in order to understand how parents might influence the psychosocial adjustment of young people whose appearance diverges from the norm.
Can Psychedelics Alleviate Symptoms of Cluster Headache and Accompanying Mental Health Problems? A Case Report Involving Hawaiian Baby Woodrose
Published in Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 2020
Shevaugn Johnson, Quentin C. Black
Approximately seven hours later, Mrs. M reported that the symptoms of cluster headache and back pain had abated completely and that for the first time in a long time, she could experience pleasurable bodily sensations. Furthermore, Mrs. M reported that for the next two weeks, in addition to pain relief, the depression and self-reported symptoms of acute anxiety had improved. She further reported improvements in body image disturbance and “abandonment issues”. Unfortunately, Mrs. M’s physical and mental health problems rapidly returned two weeks following this incident. Nevertheless, she noted that this had been one of the most profound experiences of her life and that she was grateful for the two weeks of relief she was afforded. Mrs. M reported only having used Hawaiian baby woodrose on this one occasion, as she did not feel comfortable continuing her use of an illegal substance.
