Stimulant Laxatives increase the movement or motility of the intestines, helping the stool to be pushed out. The most common over-the-counter versions are bisacodyl (the main ingredient in Dulcolax) and senna (the main ingredient in Senokot). Senna is actually a naturally occurring herb that has been used for millennia to treat constipation. Unfortunately, stimulant laxatives can cause pretty intense cramping, abdominal discomfort, and even urgent diarrhea.

Senna is approved by the FDA as an over-the-counter (OTC) laxative and its purchase does not require a prescription. Senna is also used for anal or rectal surgery, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, tears in the lining of the anus (anal fissures), and weight loss.

After insuring that the colon was clean, the child was begun on a bowel regimen of 15 mg of senna daily. Senna will help to keep water within the intestine, softening stool and stimulating bowel movement. An abdominal X-ray was planned in 1 week to assess the stool load.

The uncontrolled generation of ROS, as well as defects in the antioxidant system of the human body, results in oxidative stress in AML patients (20). Therefore, it is hypothesized that treatment with antioxidant agents could reduce ROS production in cancer by scavenger systems (21). There is a growing interest in finding phytochemicals with antioxidant properties which can prevent cellular oxidative damage in cancer. Natural phenolic compounds comprise a wide range of herbal components, which are usually found in the human diet and represent therapeutic benefits (22). For instance, the rosemary plant is native to the Mediterranean region and has antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, pain-relieving, and anti-microbial properties and is prescribed for the treatment of migraine, insomnia, cancer, and diabetes (23). In addition, the Senna plant has antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties and is used for the treatment of kidney injury (24). SA is a phenolic compound that is abundantly found in olive, honey, spices, grape, acai palm, and pumpkin. It has beneficial properties in medicine, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory activity, and it protects the heart, brain, and liver against oxidative stress (25).

All MRI studies were performed using one of three 3.0T MRI systems (Sigma HD, GE Medical Systems; Discovery MR750, GE Medical Systems, Little Chalfont, UK; Intera Achieva, Philips Medical Systems, Maplewood, MN, USA) without endorectal coil 4–6 weeks before prostate biopsy. The scan sequences included diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) (b-values: 0, 800, and 1000 s/mm2),dual-echo T1-weighted imaging in the sagittal planes, fast-spin-echo T2-weighted imaging in the axial planes, and dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging (DCEI). The main MR imaging acquisition parameters are described in Supplemental data S1. The apparent diffusion coefficient map was generated from the DWI, with b-values of 0 and 800 s/mm2. The patients were asked to take senna leaf particles (a kind of traditional Chinese medicine) as a laxative one day before the examination.

Constipation is well known as an acute or chronic gastrointestinal disease characterized by infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry faeces, incomplete bowel evacuation and difficulty during defecation (Walia et al. 2009). Until now, several drugs were developed to treat this disease. In most cases, chemical drugs (laxatives) including Senna™, Correctol®, Exlax®, Senokot™ and Gaviscon® act as stimulants to increase bulkiness and soften stool or as osmotic agents, trigger bowel movements and enhance water flow into the colon to promote elimination (Voderholzer et al. 1997). But, most of above drugs showed some undesirable side effects, such as myocardial infarction, artery contraction and coronary spasms (Lembo and Camilleri 2003; Busti et al. 2004; Kim et al. 2013). Therefore, many studies have focused on identifying novel laxatives with no side effects to treat constipation patients. As part of above studies, we investigated the laxative effect and action mechanism of QCT in Lop-induced constipation model. The results of the present study first demonstrated that QCT can improve the symptoms of constipation through the elevation of stool excretion, and the recovery of histological changes of the transverse colon in Lop-induced constipation model. Especially, our data show the laxative effects of QCT are tightly correlated with the interaction between QCT and mAChR M2/3 signalling pathway.
