Hydrogen peroxide also can be used as a sanitizer because it has bactericidal, fungicidal and sporicidal activity and can be purchased as a 35% stable solution, though it is not widely used (82). Hydrogen peroxide use concentration and contact time is between 1% and 35% and 30 minutes. The disadvantage is that it is highly reactive and is less stable in the presence of light.

Topical antiseptic agents are cytotoxic in vitro and potentially sensitizing39,40. The use of hexachlorophene, benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine, gentian violet and alcohol should be discouraged on open wounds. Hydrogen peroxide has a transient antimicrobial activity and although toxic for fibroblasts in vitro did not impair wound healing in vivo37,41. Ethanoic (acetic) acid is very useful for the treatment of ulcers colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, in concentrations of 0.25% it impairs wound healing when compared with normal saline treated wounds41. Cadexomer iodine is an antiseptic that releases iodine at low concentrations which do not appear to be toxic in vivo42–44. Cadexomer iodine appears to be a safe alternative to hydrocolloids and paraffin gauze dressings in the treatment of venous leg ulcers, especially for highly exudative wounds45,46.

In the United States today only hydrogen peroxide enjoys any substantial commercial popularity as the active oxidant in hair waving neutralizers, although in the past bromates were also used commercially. However, hydrogen peroxide is cheaper, faster, effective at lower concentrations, and leaves hair feeling softer that bromates. Another reason for the popularity of hydrogen peroxide is safety. Hydrogen peroxide has an excellent safety profile while that of bromates has been questioned. However, recent investigations indicate that bro-mates can be used safely.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a colorless and odorless liquid with an oxidizing agent used in most household disinfectants. It is used as a general household disinfectant, in nonchlorine bleach, as a contact lens disinfectant, in hair coloring and some tooth whitening products, as well as in the chemical industry and for medical sterilization.1 Hydrogen peroxide can come in different concentrations, from 3% to 90%;2 generally, severe H2O2 toxicity occurs with a 35% concentration. Concentrated H2O2 is caustic and may cause local tissue damage upon exposure.3 The toxicity can be evaluated with three mechanisms: lipid peroxidation, corrosive damage, and oxygen gas formation.3 Hydrogen peroxide toxicity from accidental ingestion has generally been seen in adults. We describe a newborn who was given H2O2 accidentally by his father.

If dental staff had any COVID-19 symptoms, they were instructed to stay home and referred to COVID-19 testing. One asymptomatic day was required before returning to work. All dental staff were protected by a FFP2-mask, disposable liquid impermeable protective gown, a cap, goggles/face shield, nitrile or latex gloves, and disinfectable shoes. PPE was put on in an isolated, separate space that was specifically prepared for this purpose. In the operating room, the patient was given antimicrobial hydrogen peroxide (1.5%) mouth rinse to rinse for 1 min as recommended earlier [3]. The dentist checked the medical and dental history and oral symptoms, examined the patient and possible X-ray image, assessed the diagnosis and gave the necessary dental treatment in agreement with the patient. Dental nurses prepared for the upcoming procedure and only the necessary instruments were provided to avoid contamination. There was one dental nurse in the operating room and another outside ready to assist with necessary instruments if needed. Using rubber dam was recommended whenever possible based on its efficacy to significantly reduce airborne particles [24]. Between patients longer breaks than usual were taken, which allowed better ventilation in operating rooms [8]. Staff was instructed not to enter operating room without FFP2-mask at least for 30 min after AGP. The treatment protocol is shown in Figure 3.

Hydrogen peroxide has been used for its antiseptic properties since the 1800s [42]. Initially, H2O2 was used as a disinfectant, and it is used at various concentrations to disinfect materials such as drinking water, medical equipment, and septic tank waste. Free hydroxyl radicals react with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, cleavage of the RNA and DNA backbone, oxidation, causing denaturation of proteins, disruption of biological membranes and sulfhydryl bonds in proteins and enzymes [43]. High concentrations of H2O2 can counter the decrease in efficacy when it gets degraded in water and oxygen with the presence of catalase. High temperatures are also needed as a crucial factor with increased H2O2 concentrations [44,45]. Recently, in a study conducted on 73 N95 masks from five different models, Cramer et al. have shown that ionized H2O2 technology Stera-Mist is effective in sterilizing N95 masks [46].
