Datura metel and Datura innoxia are used by natives for treatment of cancer in the selected study areas. In other previous studies, Helicteres isora [13–15] was reported for cancer treatment. Various herbal remedies have been studied for different genito-urinary ailments (such as infertility, gynecological disorders, urinary disorders, sexual weakness, menstrual problems, etc.) [8, 9, 24, 29].

Dried leaves and flowering tops official in the B.P.C. under the name Daturae Folium. “Datura metel was found useful in luring virgins into prostitution; subsequently, they would employ extracts of the herb as ‘knockout’ drops to take advantage of their clients.”54
Protecting Pancreatic β-cells from Metabolic Insults

The seeds of Datura metel L. powdered and given to alloxan-induced diabetic Wistar rats at a single dose of 75 mg/kg lowered glycemia from about 20 to 5 mmol/L at 8 hours, and this effect was similar to gliclazide at a single oral dose of 0.5 mg/kg.376 The powder given to p Wistar rats at a single dose of 75 mg/kg lowered glycemia from about 6 to 4 mmol/L.376 Induction of hypoglycemia in both healthy and alloxan-induced diabetic rodent indicates an insulinotropic effect. The seeds of that toxic plant contain atropine and scopolamine which are muscarinic receptor antagonists. Natural products that stimulate M3 muscarinic receptors in β-cell increase insulin secretion and conversely muscarinic antagonists reduce insulin secretion. The results presented by Krishna Murthy et al. (2004) provides further understanding of anticholinergic natural products of β-cells.378 The plant is toxic.

Lantana camara is reported with antiviral properties against various viral infections by regulating the cellular immunity (Hasan 2017). Calotropin obtained from Calotropis gigantean was observed with potential herbal medication which act as COVID-19 Mpro inhibitor (Sharma and Kaur 2020). Seeds of Datura metel Linn. were reported with in vitro antiviral properties against rabies virus and it was suggested that seeds of Datura can be used against rabies virus in murine model in future studies (Roy et al. 2016). A study done on Cannabis sativa L. revealed that, cannabidiol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol compounds can be used as potential drug against human coronavirus and to treat COVID-19 patients (Raj et al. 2021). Hydroalcoholic formulation of belladonna (B200), consisting of atropine and scopolamine revealed its antiviral efficiency against JEV infection. Treatment of B200 enhances neuronal cell survival by minimizing JEV induced cytopathic effects (Kumar et al. 2020).

Interest has increased globally on the use of medicinal plants (Quansah and Karikari 2016). The genus Datura from the Solanaceae family has a long and clear history in traditional medicine (Śramska et al. 2017). Species such as Datura stromonium, Datura innoxia, and Datura metel contain flavonoid and alkaloid compounds. Datura innoxia is an annual with a vegetal stem and large, pale green leaves (Figure 1(A)). This plant is funnel-shaped with white flowers, five stamens, and a superior ovary (Schultes and Hofmann 1979, Fatima et al. 2015). Because of the fragrant odor of the flowers at night, D. innoxia is also known as moon flower and it is cultivated as a woody ornamental (De Wolf 1956). Datura innoxia differs from D. stromonium in having small flowers and smooth-edged leaves (Figure 1(B)) (Kayani et al. 2014). The seeds are black and disk-shaped. The fruit is thorny and are known as thorn apples (Fatima et al. 2015).

Datura metel is a Solanaceae plant which contains different alkaloids (Prasad and Gowda, 2005). It is used locally in the treatment of asthma, bronchodilation, glaucoma, and antibiotics (Hilal et al.2014) and cancer treatment (Devi et al.2011). Recreation use of Datura plant is increasing among adolescents (Moses 2010). World drug report as produced by the United Nations Office of Drug and Crimes claimed that datura plant is one of the new psychoactive substance (NPS) recorded in Africa (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), 2017, 2018).
