Grinding gives power and color

The dilution and trituration effects of mercury are increased. But this potentization is not due to dilute mercury, but it is due to the formation of mercuric oxide, which is highly potent in higher dilution than concentrated mercury. With the knowledge of chemistry, we know that “Silver undergoes no change in water or pure air. Silver is unaffected by caustic alkalis even on fusion and by vegetable acids. Dilute hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid also have no action” (Soni, 1981, p. 2.141). “Gold does not tarnish when exposed to air or oxygen even at high temperature. Common acids do not attack it if used singly” (Soni, 1981, p. 2.154). “Platinum is a noble metal and is very slightly affected even on prolonged heating in air. It is very resistant to the action or acids. Boiling concentrated sulfuric acid attacks it to a slight extent” (Soni, 1981, p. 3.311).

Liqu. (περὶ ὑγρῶν χρήσιος, de liquidorum usu)
Published in Elizabeth M. Craik, The ‘Hippocratic’ Corpus, 2014
Erotian glosses seven words from On the Use of Liquids (περὶ ὑγρῶν χρήσιος).1 It seems from his preface, where it is included in the category of therapeutic works on regimen, that Erotian knew the work as ‘On Waters’ (περὶ ὑδάτων). Athenaios too mentions a Hippocratic work with the title ‘On Waters’ and it is clear that his slightly inaccurate citation, ‘Hippocrates calls good water drinkable’ (with amplification of the simply stated ὕδωρ ποτόν ‘drinking water’ and substitution of the synonymous πότιμον for ποτόν) is based on the opening words of On the Use of Liquids as transmitted (Athen. 2. 46). In the same passage, Athenaios comments that good water, poured into a metal vessel, does not tarnish it; this may stem from elaboration of the ensuing cryptic Hippocratic phrase ‘best for things of iron and bronze’ (σιδηρίοισι καὶ χαλκείοισι κράτιστον). Like Erotian, Galen included words from the work in his glossary and in addition, he cited it several times elsewhere (de sanitate tuenda, 6. 198 K.; Hippocratis Epidemiarum VI et Galeni in eum commentarius, 17A. 891 and 17B. 36 K.; Hippocratis Aphorismi et Galeni in eos commentarii, 17B. 801 K.). When Galen uses a title, it is On the Use of Liquids. As coverage is not confined to water, the title On Waters does not accurately represent the content; the title On the Use of Liquids is better, though it too is somewhat misleading, as it does not immediately indicate that the subject matter concerns liquids for external applications, not fluids for drinking.
A Preliminary Investigation into the Use of Humor in Sport Psychology Practice
Published in Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, 2019

To include humor, practitioners should be mindful of certain issues. For example, Foster (1978) suggested that space for humor must be “allowed” in that practitioners should accept and share their own vulnerabilities and limitations (i.e., self-disclosure via humor). However, practitioners should be mindful that such self-disclosure presents the possibility of failure (Foster, 1978). For example, self-disclosure might consist of content that does not contribute to the client’s understanding and/or well-being and may tarnish a client’s perspective of the practitioner’s competency and/or well-being (Franzini, 2001). In the current study, most of the participants “allowed” space for and reported being comfortable using humor. Therefore, to ensure appropriateness of humor practitioners (irrespective of experience level) might reflect upon the following: (a) Am I comfortable using humor? (b) Why, why not? (c) Is the dis/comfort due to my personality? (d) Is my use of humor congruent with my practice philosophy?
Art Therapy Gold: American Art Therapy Association at 50
Published in Art Therapy, 2019
Gold does not tarnish and so it does not need to be confined to a vault or museum case. This unique metal can be handled, worn, and appreciated. This attribute gives permission to reexamine what is valuable in art therapy in order for it to maintain its brilliance over time. Whereas many of the articles in this issue indicate how art therapists can learn from and honor the past in order to view the present, two articles call attention to charting a course into the future. Theresa Van Lith and Megan Beerse identify areas of research that can affirm the distinctive contributions of art therapy. Juliet L. King, Girija Kaimal, Lukasz Konopka, Christopher Belkofer, and Christianne Strang demonstrate how to locate art therapy within the burgeoning world of neuroscience. These contributions combine to cement the role of art therapy in health practices and explain mechanisms of change for understanding the unique properties art therapy offers to clients and communities. In so doing, art therapists are challenged to honor their foundation, critique suppositions, ascertain knowledge to augment assumptions, and re-interpret art therapy for the current times.
Are you two sisters? Reflections on a long-overdue subtitle
Published in Journal of Lesbian Studies, 2021
The Press accepted the subtitle. The book was approved with much appreciation. I was glad I had added the word “lesbian,” though still worried about possible consequences. Was the word just too limiting? Would it tarnish the book somehow? Was it now passé? But I knew it was important that the word was there. I could see that the main title suggested an ambiguity also present in the titles of my previous books dealing with lesbian realities. It suggested an invisibility, a presence and yet an absence, a sense of “Now you see us. Now you don’t.” But peeking out from beneath that questioning title was the word lesbian. It revealed a bit more than I wanted it too, leaving me somewhat uncomfortable, but perhaps that was as it should be.
