The benign facial skin tumors can cause cosmetic nuisances. Especially female patients request dermatological assistance. The principal treatment of fibrofolliculomas/trichodiscomas is CO2 laser treatment, but ErbiumYAG laser is also used [79,80]. Others use hyfrecation (electrodessication) [81]. The treatment can be performed in local analgesia. Treatment is not curative, and repetitive treatments are often necessary. The treatment creates minor depigmented scars, which can easily be covered by makeup. The m-TOR inhibitor rapamycin is used for topical treatment for facial angiofibromas in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Recently, topical rapamycin 0.1% was tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized split-face study on facial fibrofolliculomas in 19 patients with BHD for 6 months. However, no effect of treatment was found [82]. Future elucidation of the molecular pathways involved in fibrofolliculoma/trichodiscoma tumor formation is vital for developing topical pathogenesis-directed therapy [83].
Surgical treatment of skin disorders

Electrosurgery describes the generation of heat by the flow of electricity through tissue. A high frequency current is used as this can pass through tissue without causing muscular contraction. The Hyfrecator® is a low power electrosurgery machine which has been indispensible to generations of dermatologists. Pinpoint elements allow the application of sparks directly to the skin surface to destroy small lesions, or with prolonged contact, to desiccate the skin. Heat usually results in the skin splitting at the dermoepidermal junction and the surface comes away as a blister. Bipolar forceps can be used to precisely coagulate small blood vessels during surgery.

Treatment of sebaceous gland hyperplasia: a review of the literature

Electrodessication with low-power hyfrecator constitutes a cheap, effective, and readily available treatment option for SGH. However, as with cryotherapy, this procedure can be time consuming and tedious if multiple lesions require treatment (8,34). The advantages of cryotherapy over other modalities for SGH lesions are its short preparation time, low risk of infection, and no requirements for expensive equipment or injectable anesthesia (36). Typical posttreatment effects include temporary erythema, crusting, and discomfort. There is also a risk of scarring or dyspigmentation, and recurrence of the lesions (29).
