Potential of Spices As Medicines and Immunity Boosters

The seeds of Nigella have melanthin, a chemical similar to helleborin and, have diuretic, anthelmintic, and emmenagogue properties, like saponin, therefore used as a corrective of laxatives. Possessing actions as a galactagogue, they are given to lactating mothers, along with other medicines. Seeds mixed with powdered camphor, are used to protect wardrobes from insect damage all over India. The seeds possess antibilious property administered internally to arrest vomiting. Relief from cold and inflammation of mucous membranes in the airways of the nose are obtained by inhaling fried seeds tied in a muslin bag. A concoction with Nigella seeds, cumin seeds, black pepper, raisins, tamarind pulp, pomegranate juice and sonchal salt with molasses syrup and honey is used to overcome loss of appetite and distaste for food. Application of seed powder in vinegar for skin infestations and baldness has been indicated by Weiss (2002). However, usage of Nigella seeds is to be done with caution, as its volatile oil yields melanthin, nigelline, damascene, and tannin, of which melanthin is toxic, when consumed in large dosages and nigelline is paralytic. The traditional use of Nigella seeds in curing dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and related abnormities, indicated a relative toxicity of this plant (Malhotra 2006). Nigella is also used in preservation as its alcoholic extract shows antibacterial activity.
Moringa oleifera (Drumstick)
Published in Mehwish Iqbal, Complementary and Alternative Medicinal Approaches for Enhancing Immunity, 2023
Moringa oleifera is loaded with nutrients due to a range of crucial plant chemicals found in its pods, seeds and leaves. In point of fact, the drumstick is believed to provide ten-fold more vitamin A in comparison with carrots, 25-fold more iron in comparison with spinach, nine-fold more protein as compared to yoghurt, seven-fold more vitamin C in comparison with oranges, 15-fold more potassium as compared to bananas and 17-fold more calcium as compared to milk (Rockwood et al., 2013). The reality that drumstick is uncomplicated to grow makes it a long-lasting treatment for malnutrition. Regions like Benin and Senegal manage children with drumstick (Kasolo et al., 2010). Children who don't have enough provision of breast milk are inclined to demonstrate malnutrition symptoms. The agents that are prescribed to enhance the synthesis of milk in lactating mothers are termed galactagogues. These agents consist of plant sterols and function as a hormone precursor needed for reproductive development. The moringa plant is loaded in phytosterols such as campesterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol, which are hormones precursors. These constituents enhance oestrogen synthesis, which sequentially invigorates the multiplication of the ducts in mammary glands to synthesise milk. It is consumed to manage malnutrition in younger children (less than three years of age) (Gopalakrishnan et al., 2016) (Figure 19.1).
Fenugreek in Management of Female-Specific Health Conditions
Published in Dilip Ghosh, Prasad Thakurdesai, Fenugreek, 2022
The breastfeeding mother’s milk is easily digested by the newborn, directly promoting their growth and health (Damanik, Wahlqvist, and Wattanapenpaiboon 2006). However, a medical management option, the galactagogue, is needed in nursing mothers who have insufficient milk production (Khan, Wu, and Dolzhenko 2018). The synthetic galactagogues such as metoclopramide, domperidone, chlorpromazine, and sulpiride increase milk production through serum prolactin stimulation and dopamine D2 receptor antagonism but have unacceptable side effects (Gabay 2002). Therefore, natural galactagogues have become the preference of lactating mothers.

In recent years, there has been a substantial growth in the use of phytotherapy to treat different diseases, particularly in developing countries (Adelanwa and Tijjani 2013). According to earlier researches, several medicinal herbs have a nephroprotective effect when exposed to CCl4 by suppressing oxidative stress in renal tissue and improving the body's antioxidant defense mechanism (Khan et al. 2010, Mohamed et al. 2014). Among these plants, some Pulicaria species are rich with phytochemicals and, therefore are used in galactagogue, carminative, dysentery, cold, cough, antifungal, antischistosomiasis and antioxidant agents (Abd-Alla 2004, Elshiekh and Abdel Moniem 2015, Hussein et al. 2017, Mirghani et al. 2020). Genus Pulicaria is widely distributed in North Africa, Europe and Asia (Hussein et al. 2017). Pulicaria crispa (Forssk.) is widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin (Maghraby et al. 2010) and the aerial parts of this plant are used in southern Egypt as herbal tea, as well as for treating inflammation and vaginal tumours (Ghahghaei et al. 2014). The chemical investigation of the genus revealed the presence of sesquiterpenes lactones, diterpenes, simple phenolics, flavonoids, caryophyllenes and caryophyllane derivatives (Abd-Alla 2004, Mirghani et al. 2020).

The genus Ducrosia (Apiaceae) consists of six species: Ducrosia ismaelis Asch., D. flabellifolia Boiss., D. assadii Alava., D. areysiana (Deflers) Pimenov & Kljuykov, D. inaccessa (C.C.Towns.) Pimenov & Kljuykov and D. anethifolia (DC.) Boiss. D. anethifolia is one of the three species growing wild in several areas of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and some other Arab states and countries along the Persian Gulf (Aynehchi 1991; Ghahreman 1993; Mozaffarian 1996). The whole herb, especially its aerial part, has been used in Iranian folk medicine as an analgesic and in case of anxiety and insomnia (Shalaby et al. 2014). The aerial part, including the seed was reported to be carminative and useful for irregularities of menstruation and galactagogue (Amiri and Joharchi 2016). The herb is added to a variety of Persian foods for flavouring (Aynehchi 1991; Haghi et al. 2004).
Female hospital workers in Morocco: factors influencing breastfeeding duration with self-reported experiences

I’ve breastfed my second child for 6 months. I had to give up because of hypogalactia despite taking galactogogue foods like anise, fish, and fenugreek. I struggled to give my child a few sips of my milk. The problem which astonished me was that both my pediatrician and my gynecologist did not recognize the veracity of this hypogalactia.
