Abies Spectabilis (D. Don) G. Don (Syn. A. Webbiana Lindl.) Family: Coniferae
Published in L.D. Kapoor, Handbook of Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants, 2017
Diagnostic characters of transverse section of A. racemosus are126 presence of piliferous layer, often ruptured, outer cortex of 7 to 10 layers of suberized thick-walled cells; inner cortex 18 to 24 layers in upper level, 42 to 46 layers in middle level. Sclerenchyma is scattered in upper level only, stone cells and raphides present, vascular bundles number 30 to 35 in upper level and 35 to 45 in the middle. Tracheids, metaxylem vessels, and fibrous pith cells are present.

There are huge variation in cassava morphological attributes depending on origin, variety, and agronomic conditions. The height of the shrub ranges from 1–4 m and plant consist of tuberous root, stem, and leaves (Figure 1). The size of mature roots varies about 30–120 cm in length and 4–15 cm in diameter (Kobawila et al. 2005). The mature storage roots have 3 distinct parts namely parenchyma, bark (periderm), and peel (cortex). The parenchyma consists of the edible part of the root and represents 85% of total weight. The outermost skin (peel) constitutes 11–20% of total root weight and is comprised of cortical parenchyma, sclerenchyma, and phloem. The periderm, representing 3% of root weight is a small layer made of few thick cells. The peeled roots are white in color and cylindrical or conical in shape (Alves 2002).

The petiole and stem anatomical characteristics of M. foetida were studied and the following were observed. Petiole anatomy: the epidermis is single-layered and piliferous, sclerenchyma has 3–4 layers, parenchyma is elongated with 1–2 layer(s), collenchyma is absent, the vascular bundle is bi-collateral and 10 in number and pith is present. Stem anatomy: the epidermis is single-layered, collenchyma and cortical parenchyma are both 2–3 in layers while the sclerenchyma has 6–7 layers, pith is also present and the vascular bundles are bi-collateral and 12 in number [23].
