Electrohydraulic Servo Systems, Proportional Valve Systems, and Load-Sensing Systems
Published in Anton H. Hehn, Fluid Power Troubleshooting, 1995
One type of electrohydraulic servo valve consists of an electrical torque motor, a nozzle-flapper pilot stage, and a sliding-spool main stage. The torque motor includes coils, pole pieces, magnets, and an armature (Fig. 14.24). The armature is supported for limited movement by a flexure tube. The flexure tube also provides a fluid seal between the hydraulic and electromagnetic portions of the valve.

Electro-hydraulic servo valve is the key component in electro-hydraulic servo control system, and its performance directly determines and restricts the control accuracy, response characteristics, reliability and life expectancy of electro-hydraulic servo. It is a kind of hydraulic control valve which receives the analogy electric signal and outputs the modulated flow and pressure. At present, the most common use of electro-hydraulic servo valve are the jet pipe servo valve and nozzle flapper servo valve. Compared with the nozzle flapper servo valve, the jet pipe servo valve is widely used in aviation, aerospace, military and other fields because of its high resistance to contamination, high reliability and other advantages (Wang 1999, Fang and Huang 2007, Huang and Hou 2007, Chen et al. 2014, Zhou et al. 2014).

The electro-hydraulic servo valve, which is the core part of servo control system, has been widely employed in the control and adjustment of aeronautical and space vehicles. The spool valve and sleeve are two key parts in the servo valve and the spool valve and sleeve must be used as a pair. According to engineering experience, over sizing their gap will reduce the liquid leakage, while under sizing their gap will affect the slide speed of the spool valve. Thus, the length of the gap between the spool and the sleeve is a key quality characteristic of a servo valve.

In this paper, the valve-controlled electro-hydraulic servo control system is used to control the joint of the hydraulic robot. The valve-controlled electro-hydraulic servo hydraulic system is mainly composed of a quantitative pump, electro-hydraulic servo valve, overflow valve, unloading valve, filter and other hydraulic components. The quantitative pump provides power for the system. The relief valve and the unloading valve provide safety protection. The output angle of the hydraulic robot joint is controlled by the electro-hydraulic servo valve.
