Extrusion welding

Extrusion welding is a hot-air welding system that involves the addition of glue or another material while welding. It is commonly used for capping and patch repairs, as well as for joining panels in areas where fusion welding is not feasible. The process involves a hand-held portable extrusion welding device with three functional elements: a preheat system for hot air, a plasticising system with temperature control, and a Teflon welding die. Hot wedge and extrusion welding are considered the most reliable seaming methods to date. Hot wedge welding passes a wedge of hot steel between the overlapped sections of adjacent membrane, melting the sheet. Pressure rollers fuse the sheet together, most often in two tracks separated by an air gap to enable air pressure testing of the seam for leaks. Extrusion welding involves placing a bead of molten parent material either between the adjacent overlapped sheets, or over the top of the adjoining sheets.

In extrusion welding, a ribbon of molten polymer is placed along the edge of the sheets to be joined and melts and fuses with the sheets. However, with fusion seams, a hot air gun is used to melt the polymers and fuse them together.

In this study extrusion welding was applied to HDPE parts by using a hand-held portable extrusion welding device that (Figure 3) consists of three functional elements: preheat system for hot air, which is used to preheat the welding zone; the plasticising system with temperature control, a small extruder, in which an extruder rod is melted, homogenised and brought to a controlled mass temperature of 200–220°C and discharged at a certain discharge speed of 12 m/hour through the Teflon welding die which is the third functional element (Müller 2007).
