Initiation of Ignition in Ammunition
Published in Ajoy K. Bose, Military Pyrotechnics, 2021
In the chain of events of initiation, fuzes play an active role typically for projectiles and bombs as they function after a set time delay to enable pyrotechnic composition to exhibit its special effects. Fuzes are used in illuminating, screening and colour smoke mortar bombs and shells, photoflash and incendiary bombs.
Real-time numerical calculation for penetration depth of projectiles into concrete targets

With the rapid development of new weapon technology, the protecting ability, and concealment of strategic targets has been greatly enhanced. The hard target penetration ammunition has become an important means to damage the vital strategic targets. Therefore, the role of the hard target penetration fuze has become more and more significant during the adaptive detonation for penetration ammunition. The hard target penetration fuze can determine the detonation time through sensing the real-time penetration information, such as penetration depth, deceleration and the number of penetrated layers. Thus, it is very essential to calculate the real-time penetration depth accurately for a smart hard-target projectile to achieve the maximum damage effect during the penetration.

The firearm used in the study was a short-barrel pistol (Taurus, model PT 100, .40 caliber) with nontoxic ammunition (NTA) manufactured by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC). According to the manufacturer's notes, the ammunition has a fuze with an initiator mixture that is free from heavy metals such as lead and barium. It is thus commonly used for training. The weapon model used in this study was chosen because it is one of the most widely used firearms within the Brazilian police force. It utilizes a double-action mechanism for the first shot with single-action mechanism for subsequent shots. It is used as the main weapon and its main components are: the frame, the bolt, and the barrel with the chamber.
