Screening Smoke Ammunitions
Published in Ajoy K. Bose, Military Pyrotechnics, 2021
120 mm (W) M929 with Fuze Point Detonating M745 functions [2] as follows. When the cartridge (actually a mortar bomb) is dropped down the mortar tube, the firing pin at the bottom of the tube initiates the percussion primer and charge in the ignition cartridge. The charge in the ignition cartridge flashes through the holes in the shaft of the fin assembly and ignites the propelling charge. The gases from the burning propellant expand and propel the cartridge out of the mortar tube. The fuze functions on point detonating and the booster ignites the burster charge in the centre part of the projectile body. The burster charge fragments the projectile body and disperses 144 felt wedges impregnated with WP, which burns immediately on contact with air. It is intended for use as an incendiary device and to produce a smoke screen.

The material of firing pin is 45 steel and it is defined as rigid body as its hardness is quite larger than that of the aluminum alloy stiffened plate. Therefore, the deformation and abrasion of the firing pin during peening process are neglected. Tangential friction contact is adopted and the friction coefficient between the firing pin and the stiffened plate is 0.25. The impact force is achieved by the adjustment of firing pin velocity. The velocity of firing pin is similar to the maximum initial velocity of ultrasonic amplitude transformer during UPF process. In the UPF process, velocity of firing pin can be changed by adjusting the amplitude of the amplitude amplifier, as shown in Eq. (3).
