Rolling Mills for Flat Products
Published in Vladimir B. Ginzburg, Metallurgical Design of Flat Rolled Steels, 2020
The close-coupled mill stand arrangements are used in two types of well-known rolling mills: Universal rolling mill. The universal rolling mill includes a horizontal mill stand and, at least, one vertical mill stand. In this mill both edging and flat rolling may be conducted simultaneously.Tandem rolling mill. In tandem rolling mills, two or more mill stands of the same type (usually horizontal) have a close-coupled arrangement with each other.

The friction coefficient of a rolling interface has great influence on the production stability. Elahi et al. (25) analyzed the effect of lubrication between the rolls, and found that adding friction was useful to decrease or eliminate the vibration for the mill. Jiang et al. (26, 27) analyzed the rolling of a ribbed strip combined with a friction variation model in the roll bite based on the utilization of the finite-element flow formulation, and employed the friction variation model. Lu et al. (28) calculated the lower limit of the friction coefficient in a cold tandem rolling mill by developing a new friction model. Wang et al. (29) established a basic model of unsteady hydrodynamic lubrication and relevant mathematic and physical methods to analyze the unsteady lubrication film thickness, pressure stress, and friction stress in the work zone in strip rolling. Huang (30) established the rolling process model with an asymmetric friction coefficient, and simulated and analyzed the vibration characteristics and stability. These studies considered the factor that the friction coefficient influences the stability of the rolling interface, but did not study the system dynamic stability considering specific roll surface characteristics. In addition, the complex friction contact state in the hot rolling interface (31, 32), which includes many kinds of friction forms, leads to the research on the influence of the friction coefficient on the roll load.
