These chains are precision mechanisms that, when properly lubricated, will transmit high power at high speeds and will give long service life. Silent chains, also called inverted tooth chains, operate in such a manner that the links of the chain almost completely fill the clearance space in the sprocket throughout the arc of contact, greatly reducing backlash and minimizing noise. Roller chains are available in various designs and with up to 20 strands or more for use where high power must be transmitted.

10.51 Silent chain drives are designed and constructed for an entirely different application than roller chain drives. Silent chains are used for power transmission applications that require positive control over the drive, such as timing or motion control and are not available from roller chain drives. The tooth contour on the chain underside provides this ability.
