Primary Heating and Cooling Systems
Published in Moncef Krarti, Energy Audit of Building Systems, 2020
The scroll compressor is a rotary compression device with two primary components—a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll—both needed to compress and increase the pressure of the refrigerant. The scroll compressors are more energy efficient than the centrifugal compressor because the heat loss between the discharge and the suction gases is reduced. Manufacturers of scroll compressors report that the COP of the scroll chillers exceeds 3.2.
Compressors and Pumps
Published in Leslie R. Rudnick, Synthetics, Mineral Oils, and Bio-Based Lubricants, 2020
The basic compression unit in a scroll compressor is a set of two scrolls, one fixed and the other moving in a controlled orbit around a fixed point. Areas of lubrication include a short throw-crank mechanism, bearings, and the scroll tip. Sealing is achieved through very accurate machining, proper balancing of pressures between scrolls, linkage mechanisms, and sometimes a sealing element at the tip of the involute. Other types of rotary compressors include the lobe and liquid piston or liquid ring, which require no internal lubrication.
Refrigeration Components and Evaporative Coolers
Published in Shan K. Wang, Zalman Lavan, Paul Norton, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering, 2018
The upper limit of the refrigeration capacity of currently manufactured scroll compressors is 60 tons. A scroll compressor has ηv > 95% at Rcom = 4 and ηiscn = 80%. A scroll compressor also has only about half as many parts as a reciprocating compressor at the same refrigeration capacity. Few components result in higher reliability and efficiency. Power input to the scroll compressor is about 5 to 10% less than to the reciprocating compressor. A scroll compressor also operates more smoothly and is quieter.

Scroll compressor is widely used in the air conditioning industry due to its advantages of low noise, low vibration and high efficiency (Du et al., 2022; K. Kim et al., 2021). The main components of the scroll compressor to realize the compression function include the fixed scroll (FS), the orbiting scroll (OS), the Oldham’s ring (OR), the frame and the crankshaft, as shown in Figure 1.
