Lubrication and cooling
Published in Andrew Livesey, Motorcycle Engineering, 2021
It is necessary to keep the engine oil clean and free from particles of metal and carbon that could damage the inside faces of the oil pump or bearing surfaces. This is the job that the oil filter performs. All the oil passes through the filter before it goes to the bearings. The oil filter element is made from a special porous paper; this allows the oil to pass through it but hold back the foreign bodies. The oil filter element is housed in a metal canister that works as a sediment trap for the particles that the filter element has prevented from flowing into the main gallery.
Elementary! The Steps to Reach the Proactive Maintenance
Published in José Baptista, Industrial Maintenance, 2019
In the example of the family car, the following list illustrates some basic recommendations for routine maintenance: Regular checking of the vehicle’s fluid levels, for example, engine lubricating oil, engine coolant, brake system fluid and power steering fluid.Change engine lubricating oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Replace oil filter with every oil change.Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure. Check for cuts, bulges and excessive tread wear.Periodic checking of lights: All lights should be clean and working, including brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers.Look for signs of oil seepage on shock absorbers.Inspect windshield wiper blades whenever you clean your windshield.Have the battery checked with every oil change. Cable ends should be free of corrosion.Look underneath for loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. Check for holes in muffler or pipes.

In the further, the lubricating condition of engine is not only related to the lubricant demand of engine, but also related to the supply of lubricating oil pump and the flow loss in the lubricating system. The matching work state of oil pump and engine lubricating system is calculated based on a quasi-steady-state model. On reaching a certain engine speed, the hydraulic power supplied by the oil pump must be equal to the engine lubricating hydraulic power requirement. The matching work state of oil pump and engine lubricating system is obtained through iterative calculation, as demonstrated in Equation 3. where, Pp_hyd is the hydraulic power supplied by oil pump, W; pp is the outlet pressure of oil pump, Pa; Qp is the outlet flow rate of oil pump, m3/s; pE is the engine lubricating pressure, Pa; QE is the engine lubricating flow rate, m3/s; pF is the pressure loss in the oil filter, Pa; PE_hyd is the engine lubricating hydraulic power, W; n is the engine speed, r/min; i refers to the time steps; fE_p represents the function of engine lubricating pressure and speed; fE_Q is the function of engine lubricating flow rate, pressure and speed; fF_p is the function of oil filter’s flow and pressure loss.

Internal Combustion (IC) Engines are widely used in automobile and genset applications. At present, more than 600 million vehicles are plying in the world (Kim et al. 2012). IC engine consists of many subsystems such as valve train, ignition, cooling, air intake, lubrication, starting, fuel, exhaust, emission control and electrical. Subsystems are used to convert fuel energy into rotating motion to axle very efficiently. In those subsystems, there are many wear out parts due to their dynamic motion. To prevent the wear, lubrication system consisting of oil pump and oil filter is used to ensure that every moving part in the engine gets oil which can move easily. The main parts of the engine which need lubrication are piston, bearings of crankshaft, camshaft and connecting rod, timing gears, turbocharger and cylinder head. Among these, the lubrication of the main shaft, connecting rod shaft, camshaft bearing, gears, cylinder head and piston cooling jet (PCJ) are provided through the main channel and cylinder body is lubricated through the inner oil channels, while turbocharger and air compressor are lubricated through external oil pipes mounted on the cylinder body (Liu 2017).

Planned preventive maintenance (PPM) is defined as preventative measures taken on a regular basis based on usage or calendar time. However, they differ in complexity since some of them represent ‘easy’ PPM as proposed by Seecharan, Labib, and Jardine (2018) and Moya (2004). For example, this may include who will execute the PPM tasks and when. Whereas what is considered as ‘difficult’ PPM may then be restricted to the actual contents of the tasks. To be more illustrative, a simple PPM schedule for an asset such as a car, which may be as follows: ‘change the oil filter by the mechanic using a certain spanner every six months or every six thousand miles, whichever comes first’. Now, this simple PPM instruction contains several features in terms of when or how often it takes place (every 6 months or every six thousand miles), who will carry it out (the mechanic as opposed to the driver), how it will be done (using a certain spanner), and what is the nature of the instruction itself (change the oil filter), Hence there are ‘when?’, ‘who?’ type of questions which are relatively easy to answer, and there is ‘what?’ and ‘how?’ type of questions which are relatively difficult to answer because they need more advanced expertise.
