The simplified type of reciprocating steam engine is known as the Slide-D-valve engine, using but one steam cylinder, and may be either horizontal or vertical. Figure 5-4 (a) and (b) represents this type of engine. The D-slide-valve alternately admits steam to and releases the steam from each end of the cylinder. The valve has a reciprocating motion. The piston is moved by the pressure of the steam admitted to the cylinder. At some point of the piston stroke the valve completely closes the supply port and the flow of steam is cut off. After cut off has taken place the pressure within the cylinder decreases owing to the expansion of the steam Energy stored in the heavy flywheel during the period of steam admission is used to maintain the stroke. b~d curve represents the inflation expansion stage, where b~c curve is the inflation stage and c~d curve is the expansion work stage. During this process, both intake and exhaust valves are closed. In process b~c, the piston is at the TDC position, where the injection valve is open and injects the compressed air into the cylinder. In this stage, the cylinder pressure continues to increase until approaching the supply pressure. At the supply cutoff point c, the injection valve is closed, and the compressed air expands in the cylinder to do work, pushing the piston to run.
