Filter #6—Airborne Contaminants and Moisture: is a breather filter designed to equalize pressure in the reservoir and in its simplest form utilizes a wire wool media to keep out any particulate of 40 micron and above in the air from entering the reservoir. In a more sophisticated design the breather employs a desiccant like silica gel hydrophilic material again allows the reservoir to breathe and prevent outside airborne particulate 3 micron and above from entering the reservoir, but with the added advantage of being able to wick and capture moisture from inside the reservoir and prevent outside moisture from entering the reservoir. Once saturated, the gel turns from blue to pink indicating visually its need to be changed, see Figure 19-9.

To analyze the wave structures of the breathers, we take the defocusing case () as an example. As a matter of fact, with different parameters , the line-shaped breathers have different types, such as the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev breather. In this section, we focus on the global wave structures of the breathers and do not care about their locations or local structures. Without loss of generality, we choose . There are still three undetermined parameters , which can be used to generate distinct kinds of the wave structures of the breathers. At least two parameters among are required to be nonzero. Two kinds of structures of the breathers can be generated, which are the line-shaped structure and three wing-shaped structure. When have and only have two nonzero elements, the line-shaped structure arises, as shown in the first line of Figure 6. When all the parameters are not equal to zero, the three wing-shaped breathers can always be obtained, as shown in the second line of Figure 6.
