Liquid impingement erosion

Liquid impingement erosion is the gradual wearing away of a solid surface due to the impact of a liquid directed at it. The key factors that affect this erosion are the velocity of the liquid, the angle at which it hits the surface, and the size of the droplets. Fluid erosion (or liquid impingement erosion) is a process in which a material wears when small drops of liquid strike the surface of a solid at high speeds (300–1000 m/s). In such circumstances, a very high pressure, which exceeds the yield strength of most materials, is experienced. Therefore, a plastic deformation or a fracture can result from a single impact, and repeated impacts lead to pitting and erosive wear.

The ASTM G76 – 07 standards was followed for erosion tests on jet erosion standard machine shown in Fig. 6, and the ASTM G73 – 10 standards was followed for liquid impingement erosion on a rotary machine [14] (see Fig. 7).
