Erucic acid

Erucic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that is a major constituent of mustard oil and can be produced from rapeseed oil at levels of ~30% of the glyceride fraction. It is an industrial material used to produce plastics, detergents, and lubricating oils, and can also be used for lubricant, surfactant, or biodiesel production. DSM is producing a hard–soft polyester block copolymer where the hard block is poly(butylene terephthalate) and the soft block is derived from rapeseed oil presumably derived from erucic acid (19.54). Rapeseed as well as other natural materials such as wallflower seed and mustard seed contains about 40%–50% erucic acid. By varying the proportions of the hard–soft blocks materials, a range in flexibility and hardness is achieved. The targets of these products are durable goods, sporting goods, and automotive parts.

Erucic acid which is major constituent of mustard oil is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. It is predominantly non-polar in nature and helps in restoring the ratio between asphaltenes and maltenes during the rejuvenation process by supplementing the saturates within the asphalt binder structure, as saturates within the binder are generally non-polar.
