Loading docks can be a hub of activity in manufacturing plants, warehouses, industrial buildings, and distribution centers. These areas are the primary location of movement of product in and out of the facility. As such, the loading dock area can be one of the more hazardous areas. The loading docks have an increased potential for serious injury, including overturning forklifts, employees being struck by forklifts, slips, trips and fall, trailer-dock separation, unsecured loads, just to name a few. One of the most hazardous conditions exists when semi-tractor drivers mistakenly pull away from the dock when a forklift is inside the trailer. Another hazardous condition exists called “trailer creep.” This condition results from the repeated entering and exiting of the forklift into the trailer.

When selecting optimal working equipment one has to consider both performance and occupational safety, especially in the case of machines that are used frequently, such as forklifts. Forklifts play an important role in the logistics of industrial and working environments. The frequency of forklift-related fatalities and injuries and the positive impact of safety initiatives on Victorian industry have been analysed [23]. The comfort of forklifts in the working environment is defined by many parameters, but in general drivers find solid tyres more comfortable than pneumatic ones [24]. Horberry et al. [25] evaluated a series of human-centred design interventions involving forklift vehicles and pedestrian workers. Pamučar and Ćirović [26] evaluated and selected forklifts for use in logistics centres with the MCDM model. They used the following 10 criteria to select the optimal forklift: purchase price, manufacturer’s warranty, service network, availability of spare parts, average maintenance cost, fuel consumption, maximum bearing and lifting capacity, movement speed and lifting speed. Paramasivam et al. [27] described three approaches to MCDM for equipment selection: the digraph and matrix approach, AHP and the VIKOR (in Serbian: višekriterijumska optimizacija i kompromisno rešenje, in English: multi-criteria optimization and compromise solution) process. Gauthier et al. [28] developed a loading dock safety evaluation tool that encompasses both the technical and the organizational aspects of forklift safety measures.
