Innovations in the Financing of Energy Efficiency
Published in Karen Wendt, Sustainable Financial Innovations, 2018
The ultimate potential for energy efficiency in any particular process is the difference between what is being achieved now and what is theoretically possible as defined by the laws of physics. This potential is beyond our current technical abilities to achieve. The technical potential is the difference between what is being achieved now and what can be achieved utilising existing, available and real technologies. The economic potential is the difference between what is being achieved now and what can be achieved utilising all existing, available, real technologies that are economic. This raises the question, ‘What is economic?’. The only sensible way to measure what is ‘economic’ in the micro-case of an individual firm or organisation is to use the investor’s own criterion. In macro-studies however, it is necessary to take some fixed criterion, such as a payback period or an Internal Rate of Return as it is not possible in any large sample to measure everyone’s definition of economic.
Potential of renewable energy system utilisation at decentralised level in the state of Uttarakhand in India

The potential of renewable energy systems (including DRESs) can be classified into resource potential, technical potential and economic potential (Brown et al. 2016). Resource potential is the largest potential and is solely dependent on the availability of energy resource. Technical potential is a subset of resource potential that factors in practical geographic limitations and system performance. Economic potential, a subset of technical potential, takes into account market factors namely incentives, subsidies, and purchasing power (Brown et al. 2016). This paper aims to estimate resource, technical and economic potentials of solar and biomass-based DRESs namely domestic solar water heater, solar home system, solar lantern, family size biogas plant and improved cookstove in Uttarakhand.
