Rainwater is widely used in rural areas in developing countries as a source of water and is being encouraged by agencies such as the WHO and UN Centre for Appropriate Technology because of the low level of technology involved. It has a long history dating back to Roman villas. In the present days, rainwater is used as a potable source of water in countries such as Australia, Bermuda, Israel, Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania and USA (California and Hawaii). Because of its importance to the International Drinking Water Decade, an International Conference on Rainwater Cistern Systems was held in Hawaii in June 1982. Basically, there are two types of Rainwater Catchment Systems (RWCS).

The current study focuses on sustainability in housing with special emphasis on villa systems. The analysis of the proposed sustainable villa design is completed based on the Pearl Villa Rating System developed by Estidama. The methodology aims to assess the life cycle impact of complying with the Estidama requirement in villas systems design.
