The Alpha-Mendeleev ridge, a large igneous province with continental affinities

The felsic lithology suggested by the velocity analysis is supported by the sedimentary history of the Sverdrup Basin and the Barents Shelf (Embry 2009; Anfinson et al. 2012, 2016) that require a continental sedimentary source from the vicinity of the AMR for extended periods. A continental sediment supply from the region of the AMR was common from Early Triassic to Middle Jurassic for the Sverdrup Basin and Barremian to Aptian for the Barents Shelf are documented. Limited geological data from the offshore including dredges from ships and sampling from submarines on AMR has recovered volcanic rocks that have continental flood basalt geochemistry and isotopic signature. Sediment cores on the Alpha Ridge have locally derived metasedimentary clasts and plutonic granite.
