Source lines of code (SLOC) refers to a software metric that quantifies the amount of code present in a program. It is a measure of the number of lines of code that are included in the program, including all comments, blank lines, and other non-executable lines. Metrics to quantify program complexity can be a controversial subject, but it is safe to say that front-end codes are generally simpler than back-end codes. One way to measure code complexity is to simply count the number of (non-blank, non-comment) source lines of code (SLOC) in a program. Although this approach is open to much criticism, the size of the program measured in SLOC is a proven predictor of both the effort required to develop the program and the memory size of the executable program. Front-end programs for large HPEC applications may be as small as a few hundred SLOC and may occupy only a few Kbytes of core memory. Some front-end HPEC programs, however, may be over 100,000 SLOC and will occupy a few Mbytes of memory. Back-end programs are even larger. They may be more than 500,000 lines of code and may occupy several Mbytes of memory.
