An illustration of a typical DCS in a lubricant blending plant is shown in Figure 7.18. This has a client/server architecture, fieldbus connections to different PLCs and standard interfaces to production planning systems. The client/server computers generally use the Windows operating system, now Windows 10, but previously Windows 8.1, 7, NT and XP. The programming languages for the PLCs and computers is generally according to standards ISA-S88 and IEC 1131 for the modulation of the batch structures, and the programmes are written by the suppliers of the PLCs.

Virtual operating systems and virtual machine emulated hardware characteristics used in our experiments, are shown in Table 2. For a virtual operating system, similar editions of the three following latest versions of 64-bit Windows were used: Windows 7 Professional, Windows 8.1 Professional and Windows 10 Professional.
