Information on scattering matrix or S-parameters are not sufficient to fully characterize a MIMO antenna. For proper characterization of a MIMO antenna system, we introduce a new parameter, known as total active reflection coefficient (TARC). TARC of the MIMO antenna is defined as the ratio of square root of the total reflected power to the square of root of total incident power [16].

For better characterization of the MIMO antenna, total active reflection coefficient (TARC) has been studied. It is the ratio of square root of the total reflected power divided by the square root of the total incident power in a multiport antenna system, given below as where N is the number of elements in the antenna, ai and bi are the incident signals and reflected signals, respectively and can be calculated from the measured S-parameters. The relation for b is b = Sa where S is the S-parameter matrix and a is the excitation vector [1]. The measured value of TARC is shown in Figure 11. Figure 12 depicts the envelope correlation coefficient calculated from radiation pattern of the antennas and the value is below 0.0005 for the complete range.

In addition to S-parameters, total active reflection coefficient (TARC) is also utilized in this study. By using obtained S-Parameters (reflection and transmission coefficients), the Total Active Reflection Coefficient is evaluated by Equation (14) given below Simulated and measured values lie above −30 dB in the entire operating bandwidth of interest shown by Figure 8(c) which is good for MIMO antenna configuration.
