[electromagnetism] color in the longer wavelength range for the visible electromagnetic spectrum, considered to be one of the primary colors, in comparison to blue and green. The red color spectrum is at the extreme end of the visible spectrum, ranging from approximately 600 to 650 nm. On the shorter wavelengths light is yellow and on the longer wavelength side light is invisible infrared.

As shown in Figure 2.5, visible light spectrum (i.e., from violet at about 380 nm to red at about 750 nm) being captured by the retina provides colours to the eyes. This is caused by the different reflectance ranges for different colour modules within the visible spectrum. The red colour falls within wavelengths between 620 and 740 nm in the visible light spectrum.

Every color imprints its effects on its observers. Living in an environment of a specific color, the inhabitants will behave and act accordingly. Red color is brilliant, high energy, powerful, and cheerful; gives the impression of warmth; and appears to advance slightly toward the observer. It enhances the human metabolism, causes a raise in blood pressure, and aids in digestion. Red color is highly visible and due to which it is used in stop or danger signs and fire equipments. Red is also known to be a color of love and happiness.Blue is a cold color and appears to recede from the eye of the observer. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, calmness, and truth. Blue slowdowns the human metabolism, produces a calming effect, and reduces the appetite. It is used to promote products and services related to cleanliness (filters, cleaning liquids), air and sky (airlines, air conditioners), and water and sea (mineral water). When used together with warm colors such as yellow or red, blue can create a high-impact and vibrant design.Green is a color of nature. It is retiring and slightly cold color, having a soothing effect. Objects having green color appear cheerful and fresh. It symbolizes growth, harmony, and freshness. Green has a strong emotional correspondence with safety.Yellow is very luminous, vivid, and bright color. It conveys the idea of purity, warmth, boldness, and happiness. It encourages activity, communication, and memory recall. Yellow appears more distinctly to advance to the eye.Orange is a very strong color. It possesses warmth and brightness and encourages appetite. Orange symbolizes friendship, boldness, and socialness.Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is the color of royals. It encourages spirituality, imagination, and relaxation. It is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, dreams, and magic.
Effect of color on the comprehensibility of pesticide pictograms by the agricultural workers in Central India

The results of the study indicated that color was possibly not a differentiator in pesticide pictogram comprehension at 10 mm x 10 mm size for local farmers since no significant changes were observed in the comprehension level of pesticide pictograms (10 mm × 10 mm size) with changes in pictograms’ colors (Black, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and Pink). There was no pattern in the change of comprehension level with the change in color of pesticide pictograms. The red color was preferred most by the participants for pesticide pictograms. The black color was the second most preferred color for pesticide pictograms. Safety/warning pictograms can be noticed more easily in red colors compared to other colors because of user stereotypes and people’s previous experience of red color in similar situations. From the study, it was clear that color had no significant effect on the comprehensibility of pesticide pictograms on local farmers. Black and white printing is less expensive compared to colored printing. Thus, the pictograms should be printed in black and white only to prevent price escalation in printing which would further escalate the pesticide pricing.
