Convergence creates an opportunity for new markets in which innovation not only occurs in new types of products, but also in new kinds of business models, since traditional customers try to escalate their value chain. For example, Apple iPhone is a revolutionary product which includes a widescreen iPod, a built-in WIFI, a mobile phone, an internet communication device, and a digital camera associated to an innovative user interface. In regard to the business model, Apple not only sells iPhone hardware at a tidy profit, but also maintains complete control of its product line, collecting a percentage from telecom operators based on end-user utilization rates.

Apple's mobile OS is known as iOS (previously called iPhone OS). iOS was originally developed for iPhone but later extended to support other Apple mobility devices. iOS is the OS in iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. iPhone is believed to be a revolution in mobile phones market because of its unique UI and deep integration with the web (Figure 18.6).

Proposition 1(d) shows that the optimal warranty periods of the two products under TIA and TIR are the same. It is usual that firms set the same warranty period for new and remanufactured products; for instance Apple Inc. sets a one-year warranty period for both its new and remanufactured iPhones.
