The manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance intervals are likely to be conservative. The intervals given by them may sometimes be safely extended, but only after the guarantee period has expired to avoid invalidating it. A good example of this is high voltage switchgear owned and operated by distribution network operators; over the years the maintenance intervals have been progressively extended on the basis of experience to the point where much of the switchgear is now given deep strip-down maintenance once every 12 years or so, with regular operational proof tests and inspections being conducted in the intervening period.
