Recently, the characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is used to explain the inherent physical properties of the designed antenna and to find the appropriate characteristic mode and excitation position [12]. In [13], a stereo MS antenna unit was innovatively proposed, which effectively reduced the size of the antenna and improved the gain of the antenna. The resonant characteristics of this antenna were analysed by using CMA, and the physical characteristics of the antenna were fully explained by analysing the patch antenna and stereo metasurface antenna respectively. However, only the modal significance was analyzed in this article, and no other parameters were analyzed. In [14], a detailed analysis of the proposed non-uniform MS antenna had been carried out by making full use of CMA. The effects of finite and infinite ground planes on the performance of the MS structure to achieve CP were analyzed in detail, respectively, and the different factors affecting the realization of CP were carefully analyzed to obtain a wide ARBW. However, the modal weighting coefficient (MWC), as an important parameter in CMA, was not analyzed.

Nowadays, the characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is being extensively used for developing antenna designs in various wireless applications. However, the use of CMA is still limited to slot antenna designs to produce wideband characteristics. There are only a few slot antenna designs of CMA proposed in the available literature for different applications such as bandwidth enhancement with an H-shaped slot (Chenghui et al., 2018), creating circular polarisation in U-slot (Chen & Wang, 2012) and so on.
