Pattern recognition algorithms can take advantage of the visual features presented in banknotes to achieve detection; some features such as watermarks, denomination values, national symbols, and portraits can assist in both the recognition and classification tasks. (Kitagawa et al. 2017) focused on banknote portraits; by taking into consideration that they are different in each denomination, new candidate regions were proposed to develop a detection model. In (Barani 2015), an IR sensor-based device was designed to identify denominations of Indian currency, where extracted features were employed to train a model.
