Process Architecture
Published in Vivek Kale, Enterprise Process Management Systems, 2018
Workflow systems are a subset of BPM systems that additionally have robust application integration, application development, process analysis, and richer process simulation and modeling capabilities. Workflow is broadly the automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information, or tasks are passed from one participant or entity to another for action in accordance with a set of procedural rules. A workflow process is made up of subprocess (a separate workflow process definition), activities, participants, flow control, and transition. The Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), recognizing the need for standardization of the workflow products, created the workflow reference model (WfMS) that established a standardized terminology, a standardized set of functional components (e.g., process definition tool, workflow engine, workflow client application, invoked application, and administration and monitoring tool), and a set of interfaces that connected the various functional components.

In parallel to various initiatives for developing integration architectures and platforms, enterprise model execution also gained wide attention in the mid 1990’s with workflow management (WfM). One significant promoter of the workflow management technology was the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), which is a non-profit organisation formed to define standards for the interoperability of Workflow Management Systems. The concept of workflow is inspired from Business Process Model execution as defined in CIMOSA (AMICE 1993). It focuses mainly on process definition file interchange using the ‘XPDL’ standard, which presents a process design format for storing the visual diagram and process syntax of business process models (Hollinsworth 1994). Like ENV 13550, the aim of WfM is process model execution, which is one of the main functions of an EOS.
