Workflows are the sequence of steps involved in moving from the beginning to the end of a working process.* A workflow is the execution, manual or automated, of (business) processes, in which tasks, information and documents move from A to B as the consequence of actions under a set of procedural rules. It can involve work done or decisions made by people or it can be fully automated, and its purpose is to transform materials, information or services.A workflow consists of an orchestrated and repeatable pattern of activity, enabled by the systematic organization of resources into processes that transform materials, provide services, or process information. It can be depicted as a sequence of operations, the work of a person or group, the work of an organization of staff, or one or more simple or complex mechanisms.*

Workflow management focuses on the design and management of processes. Software is used to create virtual representations of processes. Virtual process maps are easy to modify and, once quantified, enable analyses, simulations, and other models. More recently, advanced adaptive systems can optimally reconfigure a system dynamically. Business process management (BPM) systems are used to integrate processes. Agile project management is used to coordinate and manage these projects. In summary, the design, management, and control of processes have evolved from highly manual models to virtual models. Virtual process models enable easy reconfiguration as well as the addition, deletion, and modification of operational and governing business rules. These concepts are listed in Table 8.3.

The template is a special workflow type in WS-PGRADE/gUSE, containing all the properties of a workflow and restrictions on which properties can be modified and which cannot. Those properties that can be modified may have a short description, which can be assigned during the template’s configuration. In Figure 10.10, the AutoDock workflow’s receptor.pdb input file (belonging to the AutoGrid job) is configured: We have set the Upload property to free, meaning that the users will be able to upload their own files to be used as receptor.pdb by the AutoGrid job. Other properties are closed, meaning the users will not be able to modify (or even see) them. Once a template is ready, it can be exported to the internal repository, so that other users of the portal may run them.

Workflow management is a core component of modern enterprise information technology infrastructure that automates the execution of critical business processes. Once the information security policy within an organisation is defined, it is interesting to look for the completion of the workflow execution related to the organisation in question in the presence of some authorisation constraints. This research area is addressed by many researchers in the security community. Some research works (Khan and Fong 2012; Crampton et al. 2013, 2015, 2016; Cohen et al. 2016; Bertolissi, Dos Santos, and Ranise 2018) focus on the Workflow Satisfiability Problem (WSP) which asks whether there exists an assignment of tasks to users that satisfies all the authorisation constraints related to task-user assignments. This assignment is referred to as a valid user plan in (Wang and Li 2010). In case of existence of this plan, the workflow specification is said to be satisfiable. These works check the workflow satisfiability at the workflow execution each time a task is assigned to a user. Therefore, they perform this check by considering the satisfiability of the modified workflow schema. Wang and Lin study the complexity of WSP, they show that this problem is NP-complete for any workflow model supporting some type of constraints. Crampton et al. proposed in (Crampton, Gutin, and Yeo 2012; Wang and Ninghui 2010) apply various tools from parametrised complexity theory to better understand this problem complexity.

Workflow management has been considered as an efficient way of monitoring, controlling, and optimising business processes with the support of ICT. The concept of workflow was initially developed to track process-related information and the status of each instance of the process as it moves through an organisation (van der Aalst 1998). Workflow management has been recognised as valuable measures that enable process management, process reengineering and eventually the automation of organisational business processes (Xu 2011). Increased process efficiency through improved information availability, process standardisation, task assignment on an automatic basis, and process monitoring using specific management tools are some useful features of Workflow Management System (WfMS).

A workflow can be defined as a set of steps that comprise a work process, often a repeated process (Georgakopoulos et al., 1995). The steps can be a task, an event or an interaction that involves a person or a group of persons. A workflow can be sequential, when each step, except the first one, is dependent of the execution of the previous step or parallel, when two or more steps can execute concurrently. A workflow can also be seen as an abstraction of a real work, a process in a company or the life cycle of a plantation process.
