Raster to vector

Raster to vector refers to the process of converting a digital image made up of pixels (a raster object) into a vector object made up of nodes, lines, and polygons. This conversion is also known as image rendering or vectorization and is performed through image tracing technology. The first thing to note about a field model is that it is not an object model – there are no explicitly defined objects, only attributes associated with particular grid squares or other polygons. This means that recovering the spatial extent of an object involves scanning a large number of pixels, and then reconstructing its outline – a raster-to-vector conversion process that has a variety of difficulties that are well discussed in the literature.

Since image processing is performed and results are obtained in a digital image format, it is possible to apply the image tracing conversion (the so-called raster-to-vector conversion or vectorisation). Basically, an algorithm required for converting a two-dimensional image into its two-dimensional vector representation is applied. An image in a raster graphics environment (bitmap index) is just a collection of pixels, but when mapping to vector graphics, the pixels’ coordinates can be represented by a square-grid coordinate system. Depending on the different R-G-B values of each pixel, points are generated based on that grid itself. The boundary line for the entire mapped points hereafter forms the shape of the crack.
